Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy
The Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprosy has been serving patients since 1978, when it was founded by Dr. Susan Kuruvila.
The department provides comprehensive out-patient and in-patient services for the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of diseases affecting the skin and mucosae, leprosy, systemic diseases with cutaneous manifestations, and sexually transmitted diseases.
The department caters to approximately 32,435 out-patients annually. In-patient care is provided for patients requiring intensive medical management and investigations, or procedural interventions. Patients with chronic dermatological conditions are counselled regarding disease nature, treatment options, course, and prognosis, in accordance with patient-centred care principles.
Scope of Services/ Diagnosis & Treatments
The department offers medical, procedural, and supportive dermatological services including:- Phototherapy for psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo, and atopic dermatitis
- Intralesional steroid injections for lichen planus, keloids, and alopecia areata
- Wet wrap therapy for atopic dermatitis and chronic eczema
- Electrocautery and radiosurgery for warts, benign skin tumours, and moles
- Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) application for xanthelasma and acne scar resurfacing
- Podowart application for genital warts
- Nail splinting, biopsies and nail removal for ingrown nails and dystrophic nails
- Paring of corns and warts
- PPD injections for warts

Chemical peeling procedures (salicylic acid, glycolic acid, tranexamic acid, fusion peels) for facial pigmentation and acne scars
- Microneedling for acne scars, wrinkles and facial pigmentation
- PRP and GFC injections for androgenetic alopecia
All procedures are performed following standard operating protocols, infection control practices, and patient safety guidelines.

Training and Academic Activities
The department is actively involved in postgraduate teaching programs. Postgraduate trainees from Family Medicine and General Medicine undergo structured dermatology training for a duration of one month, with exposure to common dermatological conditions, chronic dermatoses, sexually transmitted diseases, and basic dermatological procedures
