General MedicineΒ
The Department of General Medicine at Christian Fellowship Hospital forms the backbone of adult medical care, providing comprehensive evaluation and management of a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions.
Rooted in Christian values of compassion, service, and ethical practice, our department is dedicated to holistic patient care. We serve as the first point of contact for most adult patients and coordinate care across specialties when required.
Β
The General Medicine department was established in 1973 by Dr Kuruvilla Varkey, M.D., after he came back after his postgraduation from CMC Vellore. The first physician of the hospital was Dr Mary Cherian, MRCP. Before that, infections were rampant at that time with many cholera and tetanus cases. For several years Dr Kuruvilla was the sole physician managing the large department with the help of junior doctors and visiting consultants.
In the mid-90s the DNB (Diplomate in National Board) postgraduate training in general medicine was started. At present we have intake of three DNB postgraduates per year. In the last 5-10 years, superspeciality departments have been established. (Cardiology, neurology, nephrology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, rheumatology etc. )
