History

History

The Christian Fellowship Hospital is run by the Christian Fellowship, a charitable society which was established by a group in 1955 (by Dr.A.K.Tharien, his wife Mrs.Mariamma Tharien and by Padmabushan Dr.Jacob Cherian and his wife Dr.Mary Cherian). It began as a small one room clinic in response to certain perceived needs in a backward area. It was started with the charitable and benevolent purpose of promoting spiritual, moral, mental and social advancement of the community, in and around Oddanchatram. It aims to serve as a Christ centered witness through the ministry of healing the whole person and being involved in other, developmental programmes of the community.

At present the hospital has 299 beds with major specialty departments. The outpatient department has an average attendance of over 1000 patients daily. Over 1000 deliveries are conducted and over 3500 operations are performed annually. The busy intensive care unit is equipped for emergency care including coronary care. There is also a paediatric ICU and nursery. Great emphasis is placed on community health programmes by organized village clinics, home visits, school health education programme and other projects for development and education.

Community health services involve activities of prevention of disease and health promotion, curative care and sound referral system. The institution has its own community health centres, one in Pachalur (rural) and four in Oddanchatram(urban), which covers 25,000 population. The institution also works in collaboration with the Government in delivering health care services to the community in and around Oddanchatram. Nursing students are actively involved in all the programmes along with the community health department.

The hospital and all its programmes are self supporting and the educational training programmes are heavily subsidized. This has been possible because of the grace of God and the sacrificial service of committed staff who make a deliberate attempt to reduce cost of spending by adopting a simpler style of life and functioning.

The Motto of The Fellowship is to “Serve in love “and its goal is to proclaim and participate in Christ Mission of Liberation from sin, ignorance, sickness and suffering.

An immense need for adequate staff and therefore training of nurses was felt, right from when the hospital began in 1955.

In 1978 the school of nursing was started with A.N.M course. In 1980 it was upgraded to the General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course.

Every year we had an intake of 35 candidates to GNM course by a rigorous entrance examination followed by 2 interviews, aptitude test and a physical check up in order to try and filter in suitable candidates.

  • These students were able to fulfill all their requirements because of the variety of patients coming to the hospital and the number of programmes available in the institution.
  • Subsequently Allied Health Service training courses were also started. Students who have graduated from the School of Nursing have been placed in various hospitals and colleges in India and abroad.
  • In view of the government notification to phase out GNM programme by the year 2020, it was decided to upgrade the School of Nursing into College of Nursing by 2019.
  • In 2019 the School of Nursing was upgraded to College of Nursing to run B.Sc.Nursing course.
